Protecting the Sacred Headwaters from Shell Oil and all gas drilling

In a far northwest corner of British Columbia, the watersheds of three important rivers - the Skeena, the Stikine and the Nass - hold crucial wild salmon habitat, pristine wilderness and deep cultural heritage. When Shell Oil launched plans to drill for coalbed methane, we knew we were in for a high-stakes campaign. We helped mobilize local community members and concerned people from around the world, while collaborating with the First Nations whose territories encompass the headwaters of these three major rivers. Then we brought the powerful message from over 100,000 voices to Shell’s corporate boardrooms in the Netherlands and Canada, and British Columbia’s Legislature. On December 19, 2012, the government of British Columbia permanently banned gas drilling in the Sacred Headwaters.
